Bangkok to Chiang Mai by bus: what to expect

The Bangkok to Chiang Mai coach is a rite of passage for travellers heading north. The journey covers around 700 kilometres and takes 9 to 11 hours depending on the operator, the class and the number of stops.

Day or overnight?

Most people take an overnight VIP or first-class sleeper, leaving Bangkok in the evening and arriving in Chiang Mai the next morning. It saves a night of accommodation and a day of travel. Daytime departures exist too and give you the scenery through the northern hills.

Where you leave and arrive

Buses depart from the Northern Bus Terminal in Bangkok, known as Mo Chit 2, and arrive at the Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal. Both are well connected to city transport, though a taxi or ride-hail is easiest late at night.

Choosing a class

• VIP 24: 24 seats, the most legroom and recline, best for sleeping.
• First class: 32 to 34 seats, a snack and blanket, a solid overnight option.
• Second class air-con: cheapest air-conditioned option, more stops.

Overnight tips

• Bring a light layer — the air-conditioning runs cold.
• Keep valuables on you, not in the hold.
• Choose a seat away from the toilet at the back for a quieter ride.
