Thai intercity buses are generous with luggage compared to airlines, but a little planning keeps your trip smooth, especially overnight.

How much can you bring?

Most operators allow one or two large bags in the hold underneath plus a small bag you keep with you. There is rarely a strict weight limit, but oversized or very heavy items may be refused or charged. If you are carrying a lot, a private drive avoids the hassle entirely.

Keep with you

• Passport, wallet and phone — never in the hold.
• A warm layer for the air-conditioning.
• Water, snacks and any medication.
• A power bank; not every bus has working sockets.

In the hold

• Large backpacks and suitcases.
• Anything bulky or awkward to hold for hours.
• Take a photo of your bag tag if the crew gives you one.
