How to book an intercity bus in Thailand

A step-by-step guide to booking intercity bus tickets in Thailand online, from choosing a route to boarding with a QR code.

Thailand has one of the densest intercity bus networks in Southeast Asia. Hundreds of private operators run coaches between provinces, from budget fan buses to VIP sleepers with two seats per row. Booking online means you can compare them all at once, pick a seat, and skip the queue at the terminal.

1. Search your route

Start by entering where you are leaving from and where you are going. A search returns every operator that runs the route that day, with departure times, travel duration and price. Overnight departures are common on long routes such as Bangkok to the north and the far south.

2. Choose a seat and a bus class

Bus classes vary by operator. As a rough guide:

• Standard / fan: cheapest, no air-conditioning, more stops.
• Second class air-con: comfortable and cheap, a good default.
• First class / VIP: fewer seats, more legroom, blankets and a snack on long trips.
• Sleeper: seats that recline almost flat for overnight journeys.

On the seat map, aisle seats are easier for bathroom stops and window seats are better for sleeping. Seats over the wheels can be bumpier.

3. Pay and get your e-ticket

Pay online and your ticket arrives instantly with a QR code. There is nothing to print. The price you saw includes taxes, and most fares can be cancelled if your plans change.

4. Board with the QR code

Arrive at the terminal 30 to 45 minutes early, find your operator's counter or gate, and show the QR code to board. Keep your bag tag if the crew loads your luggage underneath.
