Thai bus terminals explained

A quick guide to Thailand's main intercity bus terminals — Mo Chit, Ekkamai, Sai Tai Mai and the regional hubs — and how to find your gate.

Big provinces often have more than one bus terminal, each serving different directions. Knowing which one your bus leaves from saves a stressful last-minute dash across the city.

Bangkok's three main terminals

• Mo Chit 2 (Northern Terminal): buses to the north and northeast — Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani.
• Ekkamai (Eastern Terminal): buses to the east coast — Pattaya, Rayong, Trat for the islands.
• Sai Tai Mai (Southern Terminal): buses to the south and west — Hua Hin, Surat Thani, Phuket, Krabi.

Finding your gate

Terminals are organised by operator and destination. Your e-ticket shows the operator; head to their counter or gate. When in doubt, staff and information desks can point you to the right platform.

Arriving in a new city at night

Some terminals sit outside the city centre. If you arrive late, a private drive or ride-hail from the terminal to your accommodation is safer and easier than a local bus.
